NRG Deception, Potentially Clean Peaker Plant

When it comes to the underhanded tactics of the energy monsters in Connecticut nothing surprises me any more. For all of you out there who may not remember let me refresh your memory on some key promises made by our "peaker plant" by NRG.

As you all know, we needed to upgrade our failing electrical grid and provide an emergency generator on the the multi billion dollar line that has aptly become known as the Middletown power project. Soon after the celebration of its completion and all the lawsuits that followed, the MIddletown power plant exploded due to the alleged negligence of a massive gas leak.

Lawsuits aside, and the massive downward property revaluations in Milford (that are now being handled by a class action lawsuit) the peaker plant was supposed to be clean. Well I have come to discover that technically it is clean because it has the ability to use natural Gas. If you believe the CO2 emissions from its billowing smokestacks is clean than I suppose we could agree it is cleaner than the legacy left behind by the "Sooty Seven."

When I heard this "Natural Gas Capable" remark from an employee who works at the NRG site my "antenna rose up" and I dared ask the question "what do you mean Natural Gas capable?" That is when he said that "in order for it to use Natural Gas in a "peaking situation" a contract to purchase that gas would have to be made in advance. Since we do not know when it will be "flipped on" management decided it is more cost effective to burn dirty Diesel Fuel."

Without getting this guy in trouble, and the fact that I was Red with disgust and contempt for these environmental liars, I instead took the liberty to write this rant today and share my disgust with my readers. The point of the story folks, we may have gotten more tax revenue for the city of Milford but you just paid for it through higher energy prices and the maintenance of a plant that is in limited operation. So really we got little to nothing! just a big polluter and a bigger electric bill!

If you want to fight back call me, because thanks to energy deregulation we can eat into the profit structure of these criminal projects by switching your energy provider. I will gladly enroll you into North American Power, save you money, and at the same time send a message to the big lying polluters in town. Milfords Budget Process Begins

The budget for next year begins deliberations this week. Things like the cost of education, infrastructure improvement, employee bonuses and compensation, etc. etc.. all come to fruition in the near future.

Republicans, have indicated they would like to see another budget cut, conservative Democrats and former mayoral candidate Genevieve Salvatore have written to the local paper and asked that we stay vigilant, take part, and speak out during the process.

The Mayor indicated that the "Grand List" will determine whether or not taxes go up down or stay the same. Early indications, however, are not good, and city services were cut many times already.

Senator Gayle Slossberg put city council on notice last month and told Milford lawmakers not to expect money from Hartford. This combined with Employee health insurance, pension payouts, and contractual wage increases, are expected to be the largest obstacles to be overcome. These issues are of vital importance to the stressed out taxpayers of Milford.

The stress I speak of is not just sardonic rhetoric. It is very real and was evident in recent news of a longtime resident who committed suicide in her home. This was alleged to have happened as a result of prolonged difficulty in paying her bills. This was only last month and should be a sobering reminder of how tough things have gotten for some.

Other sad news was about six months earlier, in the NY Times citing our Mayor Richetelli buying cab fare for a Milford mother and her two children who were forcibly evicted from their home. Their only crime was a lack of money and suitable employment to save the life and home they built here.

These incidents do not erase the fact that in Milford Two to Three people a week lose their home to foreclosure. These are real people, our friends, neighbors those with a real connection to this community and in need of sincere help.

The city has resources and can help some of these people. This help can come to Milfords poorest by way of abatement of irresponsible government, predatory loans, and tax breaks. This city does not need $95,000.00 a year Czars, $700.00 desk chairs, $50,000.00 consultants, employee buyouts, etc. etc.

The immorality of ignoring those people with the "hug and cab fare" mentality, is not the humane thing to do. Perhaps we should put our self in their shoes and imagine what it is like to live in a shelter, be out of work and in need of food.

Those arguing this years budget should remember this and more. Remember that we are all members of the same community and it is our responsibility to lend our financial help to those who are of good moral character and sincerely need a hand up, not raise taxes to pay higher wages or waste money.

Time to set greed aside and bring about some new revolutionary ideas that will inspire revolutionary change.

Many Folks Grimace As Winter Nears

The state of Connecticut has made a big promise to the poor this winter, they promised to use the state surplus money to keep them warm. The question on everyones mind, is will that money really arrive to the cold, hungry, huddled masses and oh yes the elderly. With 6.1% Unemployment, and tens of thousands of poor in our state is this heating thing really going to work? Can it be expected to be a consumer friendly process? The answer is I do not know but anyone worried should start requesting paperwork now. (See link Below)

Incredible as it may be, it certainly all sounds too good to be true, but some have questioned that the surplus money is too little to meet the unexpected needs of the poor. Furthermore energy assistance once available to many Section 8 people who could be young moms with kids living in subsidized housing projects, may now be competing with $5.00 per gallon oil and the unpleasant suprise of the "nouveu-pauvre."

Our legislature has made a pretty big promise, or created the illusion of a promise, I believe that the the 88 million surplus may fall short in meeting the demand for energy that I expect will be coming this winter.

Should this year be colder than last year than poor folks can be expected to shiver a little more than usual as they are on the phone demanding that state oil truck.
