Sadly, the utility pole in Milford is becoming the towns most menacing object. Just in the last week, a truck coming off exit 40 struck one destroying the rig, disrupting power to a major commercial area and putting the lives of fire fighters in jeopardy.
No sooner than that accident two more teens lost their life when their Honda struck a utility pole on Gulf Street, one year earlier Jill Copperwait lost her life to a pole on New Haven Ave. and three other teens lost their life when their car struck a utility pole at the mall. The cars involved, One Subaru, a Nissan, and a Honda all foreign medium sized cars.
The state legislature adopted new teen driving laws in July of 2008 in an effort to make the right of passage a safer one. The laws are described as the "MOST COMPREHENSIVE OVERHAUL IN 35 YEARS."
However, for some the relief this program was supposed to deliver fell short because their kids obtained their drivers licences prior to the benefits yielded by it. In all recent cases involving automotive fatalities the drivers obtained their Drivers Licences under the old rules.
Many residents are are awaiting the new data to come in for those kids who obtained their drivers licence under the new state mandates and motor vehicle regulations. We sincerely hope that tragic accidents like the one we experienced over the last several years are dramatically reduced.
As Milford anxiously awaits these "comprehensive overhauls" the towns kids, parents, relatives and loved ones will remain in mourning. All of us at the MDB offer our prayers and condolences to every family who endured these many painful losses.
Two people died Sunday afternoon after the car they were traveling in struck a telephone pole along Gulf Beach on Gulf Street.
Half of the car ended up on one side of the pole and the other half of the car on the other side of the pole after the accident that occurred shortly before 4 p.m. just across from the beach's fishing pier.
Police investigators were on the scene for hours and had the road blocked off for about a quarter mile from the entrance to the beach parking lot.
The above video was released today to the New Haven Register and depicts the accident that occurred some months ago involving an officer and two young adults who later lost their lives.
The newly released video has led some to believe that speed was a factor in the accident. For more information on this story see previous posts from last week.
Last night at about 5:00P.M. a woman described as being in her 50's lost control of her vehicle in the parking lot of 487 Bridgeport Ave. The woman was driving a Mid Size Honda Civic. The result was a terrible accident whereby the veicle drove through the all glass entrance of the Sun Nail Salon.
The vehicle struck a nail station, and subsequently injured eight people, four seriously. Fortunately there were no fatalities. The woman involved in the accident told the police that she "mistankenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake."
The accident happened after she had services rendered at the establishment. The car drove completely into the store and stopped after it struck the far right hand wall. This incident marks one of the most horrific accidents involving people so far this year.
The business is currently partially boarded up and closed for business as efforts are underway to restore and repair the significant damage to that business establishment. Local newspapers have been reporting on this story today, and yesterday evening.

Last June 13Th at 2:15A.M two Orange Teens lost their lives in a very sad and tragic accident. The accident occurred when Milford Police officer Jason Anderson collided with a Mazda.
Two very young adults lost their lives, one on site the other shortly after leaving for the hospital. The graphic details of this accident were played out through the media, and although the macabre of the entertainment based society we live in would certainly make today's post interesting, those details will be spared out of respect to the injured parties.
This accident appears to be about allegations of reckless driving, more teen deaths behind the wheels of cars, cities overwhelmed with crime, and a lawless public. After learning about this sad accident, I wrote a short post just reporting what happened, I was very tempted to write more about this very issue, but decided to let the investigation and the victims families tell their stories, hire their attorneys, and let the police department release its own facts.
The allegations and charges against the police officer are now very real, being suspended from duty and having surrendered himself to the state police, a court date now looms where Mr. Anderson must defend himself from criminal charges.
The family of the victims of Servins and Krakowski, have filed a lawsuit against the city of Milford and the Milford Police Department. The details and nature of the claim are not Germain nor have they been revealed, but in the words of the litigants, "no amount of money in the world can right the loss our family suffered."
This story would have never been published had not a a bar called Utopia in West Haven broken out into a riot. West Haven Police, alleged they were unable to quell the tide of lawlessness that night and made a plea for help to the Milford Police Department. Three officers were dispatched to West Haven to assist in crowd control.
The Accident took place as Mr. Anderson was returning from that incident. The young adults he hit about an hour later (in a "T Bone Collision") were out that early morning in pursuit of cigarettes. The accident took place at the intersection of Boston Post Road and Dogwood Road in Orange
While all the facts in this case have not been revealed, there have been several requests to get the video from the police cruiser. Freedom of information requests have been made to obtain this video, but because of the nature and sensitivity of this case, and the fact their is pending litigation, the video can only be released according to the law, and with the due diligence of the many attorneys now involved.
The arrest in this case, has certainly been a positive development for some of the friends and families of the victims who have said they feel that "justice is being served, and their process of healing can begin."
To date there has been no comment by Chief Mello regarding changes to the Milford Police Departments policy of dealing with officers who engage in acts of reckless driving, drag racing or other like abuses of police vehicles.
The entire incident was a monumental wake-up call to the 100 police officers in the department who will certainly remember this incident for years to come. Even if no new policy is implemented I am certain that the magnitude of scope and nature of the loss of life, and injuries sustained, will be an induced policy that the officers will personally carry for years to come.
My prayers go out to the families, relatives, and loved ones of both victims and I sincerely wish for justice to be served in a manner that permits healing in a healthy and spiritual way.
Anderson has been charged with reckless driving. He was released on a $250,000 bond and is due in court on November 24. Keefe says he will plead "not guilty."
Should Mr. Anderson prevail in his trial with a verdict of "not guilty" this may adversely affect the damages and awards from any victim civil suits against the city of Milford and The Police Department.
A Vehicle traveling Northbound on East Town Rd collided with another vehicle and then rolled on its side.
Fireman, Ambulances and the local police department responded to the scene. No one appeared to be injured, but the occupant of the vehicle above was not apparently visible according to a witness at the scene.
The scene was contaminated with antifreze and cleanup was not yet completed but expected according to accident protocol.
The collision occurred when a vehicle exiting the Stop and Shop parking lot did not see the approaching vehicle who swerved into him and then onto its side. The Intersection where this accident occurred has no traffic light so the drivers leaving the parking lot must use their own judgement in crossing into the north and south bound lanes.
The accident occurred at apx. 10:15A.M this morning.
Baxter Pharmaceutical Claimed they accidently released live H5N1 bird flu in human Flu vaccines. This error, criticized as impossible by world medical experts, is now a serious and grave risk to people everywhere.
The virus was introduced in a manner that renders it capabable of not only infecting people, but potentially mutating into an airborne form that can be transmitted to others the same way the seasonal flu does.
This error was discovered by a Baxter subcontractor who conducted tests of the vaccine on live animals who all died. After this discovery he notified his superiors, who discovered the live H5N1 virus in the vaccine. The story then made it to the highest levels of the pharmaceudical industry, and eventually made the press.
This is a potentially fatal issue, please do your research on how to best be prepared in the event of an outbreak. Former President Bush has warned Americans on numerous occassions that the propensity for such an outbreak is real. Please refer to the following LINK for more information.
As a final note it is also important to mention that Baxter manufactures the Bird Flu Vaccine (Celvapan), a worldwide outbreak, of the Avian Flu would translate to Billions of dollars in profit for the Baxter Corp.
Late night at approximately 10:30P.M. a young woman whose name according to a witness, is presumed to be Jill Cowperthwaite, died in a high speed car accident last night. Officers on the scene indicated that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of her vehicle. Cowperthwaite was driving a 2002 Subaru.
According to our sources Jill, lived on High Street and was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Passengers Megan Cook resides on Wildwood Avenue, Morgan Dion, on Mayflower Place, and Justin Novey, 21, on Crescent Drive, all were injured.
The accident took place on New Haven Avenue by the intersection of Buckingham Rd. near Jimmy's Pizza The driver was traveling northbound struck a utility pole and then was deflected into cars parked at the lot of Ace Automotive.
The accident damage was so severe that New Haven Avenue was still closed as of now, and police estimate it will remain closed late into tonight.
The police have not divulged any information regarding the specifics of this accident as it remains under investigation and are asking any witnesses to contact them with details of what they know or saw. The Milford PD office of Community Services can also be contacted for further information.
This marks yet another tragic loss due to what appears to be wreckless driving here in town. Our prayers are with the families and loved ones of these latest accident victims.
