The Future Of Medicine.. The Posthumanist Movement

There are actually places, companies and people out there who are of the opinion that we will be able to live longer than anyone ever thought possible. Some people are actually funding research and programs aimed at human life extension.

There has already been some successes with worms, mice and flies, experiments that doubled their simple lifespans, but no such success has been attributed to any significant mammal species. Testing is underway with monkeys, and the early results indicate, to no surprise, that a calorie restricted diet comprised of quality food significantly improves health and wellness.

The post humanist movement, has been really the brainchild of Biotechnology companies, companies that use technology, in conjunction with biology. To explain this further, we already have heard about the artificial heart, but imagine stem cell research, cloning, the human genome project, retroviruses, enzyme engineering, and other sciences beyond my understanding, all working together to slow, stop or possibly reverse aging.

One such company, Alcore, has made a business of preserving their clients in the hope they can be revived some time in the distant future. The science is likened to a Frankenstein motion picture plot where we will be able to reanimate dead bodies. As outrageous as that sounds there is enough support out there to keep the dream, or nightmare (depending on how you see it) of immortality.

Below is a documentary, of a computer engineer gone biologist, Aubrey De Gray. It is important to note that Aubrey is a dreamer and the documentary clearly shows that his obsession with living forever is as old as the dream of discovering the proverbial "fountain of youth." At best it is speculative science with some merit, but at worst it is pure thrilling entertainment guaranteed to brighten your day. Enjoy the video, I certainly did.
